Expressions of Place
In 2017 I facilitated an interdisciplinary event series focused on understanding belonging to a place, home, or land. An extraordinary group of university and community members contributed time, talent, and passion to realize a range of experiences.
These included an art exhibition, terrains/territories : dreams of place, curated by Matt Groshek; a dance performance, The Birdwomen of the Lonely Fjord, choreographed by Michael Estanich; a StudyAbroad, student-focused exhibition, Traveling and Transformation, organized by Kathe Julin; a dance installation, Design Interaction, performed by Joan Karlen; a video screening and director’s talk, Sky Hopinka: Encounters with Place, arranged by Alex Ingersoll; a research symposium, Representing Place, with student work, faculty, and community members; a labyrinth talk and walk led by Katja Marquart; a speakers circle, Indigenous Perceptions of Place, facilitated by Karen Hoffman; opening and closing ceremonies. Additionally, I co-created and co-taught a Special Topics course Representations of Place, with Dr. Keith Rice from the Department of Geography.
This event series was part of COFAC Creates, supported by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, College of Fine Arts & Communication.
